Washington [US]October 13 (ANI): Federal Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met Bhutan’s Finance Minister Lyonpo Namgay Tshering in Washington on Wednesday and said India hopes to expand bilateral cooperation between the two countries on issues such as hydropower, COVID-19 aid, etc.

Sitharaman, who is on an official visit to the United States, held discussions with the Minister of Forestry during the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group (WBG) Boards of Governors.

“Union Finance Minister Smt.@nsitharaman met Bhutan Finance Minister Lyonpo Namgay Tshering @BhutanFinance today during the IMF-WB #AnnualMeetings in #Washington DC,” the Finance Ministry tweeted.

“The foreign minister stated that India looks forward to expanding bilateral cooperation between the two countries into emerging areas such as #space, #DigitalTechnologies, financial sector, health sector and higher education,” the ministry added.

Sitharaman reiterated India’s readiness to advance and “further deepen India-Bhutan bilateral relations for the development and well-being of our people”.

Bhutan’s Finance Minister thanked the Indian government for its assistance in implementing its 12th Five-Year Plan and an additional US$200 million currency swap arrangement.

“Lyonpo Namgay Tshering @BhutanFinance thanked GoI for its assistance in implementing its 12th Five-Year Plan and an additional USD 200 million currency swap arrangement. He also thanked India for having launched #BhimUPI and #RuPay in Bhutan,” The ministry said.

On Wednesday, Sitharaman held back-to-back bilateral talks with global finance ministers and the heads of top international organizations in Washington, D.C., on topics centered on key economic issues.

Sitharaman is on an official visit to the United States to attend the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, as well as the G20 finance ministers and central bank governors.

The finance minister is holding bilateral meetings with a number of countries from around the world. She also held one-on-one meetings with leaders and heads of the OECD, the European Commission and the United Nations Development Programme.

On the sidelines of the IMF-WB on Tuesday, Sitharaman met with ministers from Egypt, Bhutan, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia and South Korea. She also met OECD Secretary-General Matthias Coleman and FATF Chairman Raja Kumar.

Later in the visit, the Federal Finance Minister will attend roundtables with USIBC and USISPF on the topics of “Enhancing Investment and Innovation in the Indo-US Corridor” and “Investing in India’s Digital Revolution”.

These meetings with key business leaders and investors aim to highlight India’s policy priorities and discuss measures to promote foreign investment by demonstrating India’s attractiveness as an investment destination. (ANI)
