KARACHI, Oct. 15 (PTI) A former Balochistan High Court chief judge was shot dead as he emerged from a mosque after prayers in Pakistan’s volatile Haran district of Balochistan province on Friday night.

Muhammad Noor Maskanzai suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died when he was taken to a hospital in Quetta, some 280 kilometers from the town of Harran.

A senior police officer said the former CJ was seriously injured in the targeted shooting as he emerged from the mosque.

“He had done Isha prayers and came out of the mosque when unidentified persons opened fire on him,” said DIG police officer Nazeer Ahmed Kurd.

Two other people were also seriously injured in the shooting and are in critical condition, he said.

Police have begun investigating the motive behind the targeted attack.

Haran is considered one of the most dangerous areas in Balochistan, which has been hit by an ongoing terrorist activity by rebels and militants who oppose the government.

Deadly attacks against security officials and facilities, foreigners and locals from other provinces have increased over the past year. Earlier in the day, a remote-controlled bomb blast killed three people and injured four others in Mastung, apparently targeting a high-profile tribal leader and politician who was not injured.
