A California baker turned ‘Star Wars’ character Han Solo into a real loaf of bread.
One House Bakery in the San Francisco Bay Area created “Pan Solo,” a 6-foot-long sculpture of bread starring Harrison Ford as the Star Wars hero who appears after being frozen in carbonates in The Empire Strikes Back.
Hanalee Pervan and her mother Catherine Pervan, co-owners of Benicia Bakery, use wood and two types of dough (including a higher-sugar, yeast-free dough that lasts longer.
After the day’s work, the two work at night. Elaborate details show Han Solo’s pained face and the hands he stretches out hard.
Hanalee Pervan admits she may be fascinated by the project.
“Mom told me to leave it because I was obsessed with lips,” she told the New York Times. “She was like: ‘You need to go away.'”
She told the paper that creating Pan Solo was particularly meaningful because she contracted Covid-19 in January 2021 and lost most of her sense of smell and taste.
“So it’s really important to find joy in different parts of food,” she said.
The sculpture is now on display outside the bakery, about a half-hour drive north of San Francisco.
Pan Solo is the bakery’s entry in the annual Downtown Benicia Street Scarecrow Competition.
The public will vote for their favorite from more than two dozen entries entered by local businesses.
Pervans, a big fan of science fiction and fantasy, entered another Star Wars-themed creation in 2020, including The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda.
Unfortunately, Pan Solo won’t last forever. The dough will end up being composted rather than edible.
