e&, through its telecommunications division etisalat by e&, has partnered with Ericsson on a major expansion project to improve network energy efficiency by deploying the latest Ericsson Radio System portfolio in provider networks. The two-year project is in line with e&’s sustainability strategy launched in July 2022.
Ericsson’s dual-band radio 6626 significantly reduces energy consumption by up to 52% during the initial deployment phase compared to previously deployed radios. For sites configured with four LTE carriers, the reduction in energy consumption is equivalent to 7.6 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per site per year.
In addition, Ericsson deployed a state-of-the-art 5G mid-band radio for 5G network expansion with a 20% improvement in energy efficiency compared to previous generation radios.
Carbon Footprint
The expansion will help etisalat by e& grow its Radio Access Network (RAN) and support efforts to break the energy curve, key to reducing its carbon footprint across the region.
Khalid Murshed, Chief Technology and Information Officer (CTIO), Etisalat said: “Building a brighter digital future for all begins with placing our people, customers and the environment at the heart of our business. Despite the evolving business environment of the past few years Changes have occurred, but we remain committed to our sustainability aspirations with resilience.
“We are committed to minimising the environmental impact of our network by pursuing environmentally sustainable solutions that improve the quality of performance. The reduction in energy consumption witnessed by the deployment of the Enhanced Ericsson Radio System is part of our strategy to build a more sustainable infrastructure across the country a part of.”

Ekow Nelson, Vice President Middle East and Africa and Head of Global Accounts, Ericsson, said: “Sustainability is at the heart of our purpose and at the forefront of network innovation, we are actively supporting the wider telecommunications industry to reduce energy consumption and maximize Reduce carbon footprint.
“Our proven and tested innovative radios will allow etisalat by e& to deliver the best network performance to end users as they evolve their infrastructure to be more sustainable. In addition, the energy savings of our radios will help etisalat by e& significantly Reduce operating expenses and make a significant contribution to our net zero goal.”
Ericsson and etisalat by e& have been actively exploring sustainable networking solutions and last year hosted a sustainability-themed event at the Swedish Pavilion at Expo 2020. This latest partnership will support etisalat by e&’s sustainable transformation from a traditional telecom operator to an integrated digital solutions provider, advancing the company’s vision of empowering a digital society. — arab trade news agency
