Heavy fighting is taking place around two towns in Ukraine’s Donbas region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday (October 16).
“The main hot spots in the Donbass are Soledad and Bachmut,” Zelensky said in his nightly video address. “There is a very fierce battle going on there.”
The town of Bakhmut has been the next target for Russia’s armed forces’ slow advance in the Donetsk region since the capture of the key industrial towns of Lysychansk and Sievierodonetsk in June and July. Soledar is located in the north of Bahmut.
In his evening speech, President Zelensky called on Ukrainian citizens to reduce electricity consumption.
“Due to the terrorist attacks of Russian missiles on some cities and regions in Ukraine, we had to limit the power supply to ensure the stable operation of the whole system,” Zelensky said, adding that people should reduce electricity consumption from 5 pm to 11 pm point (1400 GMT to 2000 GMT).
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 this year. Russian troops had to retreat in eastern Ukraine in the face of a Ukrainian counteroffensive after gaining territory in the months leading up to the conflict.
Ukrainian troops have been able to retake large swathes of land.
