What the hell happened to Mrs Meade when the devil knocked on the front door of Vaughan Hall on a dark and stormy night?

That’s what the House of Spirits guests: Los Angeles’ Vaughan Hall is tasked with figuring out this Halloween season.

During the two-hour session inside the likely haunted Casa Vertigo in downtown Los Angeles, patrons will learn the nitty-gritty of what happened that fateful night. But to uncover the truth, they’ll have to interact with well-dressed characters and find clues. They will also be informed through a series of performances in various rooms, including musical performances, magic shows, trapeze, stunts performed by acrobats and burlesque dancers.

For those 21 and older, it’s a night of immersive theatre and terrifying fun, including a selection of cocktails and decadent chocolates served at a handful of bars throughout the two floors. Guests are asked to wear cocktail attire or Halloween costumes to join the fun.

“We’ve seen all kinds of things in the past,” creative director Justin Meyer said in a recent interview with the event, which is now open on select nights on Oct. 31. “We’ve seen everything from beautiful, elegant Halloween costumes to big strips of bacon coming through our doors.”

House of Spirits was created by Los Angeles resident Melissa and Justin Meyer of Meyer2Meyer Entertainment. The pair previously worked at another popular Southern California Halloween attraction, The haunted Hayride in Griffith Park, LA. They launched their own ghost event concept in the first season of 2019, Casa Vega. The pandemic halted the game in 2020, but in 2021 they went ahead with the second season of the event, Volkov Manor.

“Each event is a separate season with its own storyline based on certain folklore from different parts of the world,” explains Justin. “Usually I’m inspired by history, so for the first one, we had Francisco Goya and his black paintings, while the second one focused on Slavic myths and legends and Rasputin. This season, I was inspired by Inspired by one of Ireland’s most famous haunted houses: Loftus Hall. While this could be roughly used as inspiration, we created our own original characters and stories from there.”
