Sheep replaced cars on the streets of Madrid on Sunday as shepherds led their flocks through the heart of the Spanish capital along ancient grazing routes to pastures in the south for winter grazing.
Locals and tourists lined the route, watching as thousands of sheep passed through the city, bells around their necks to a raucous soundtrack.
The annual event resumed in 1994 as part of Madrid’s annual Fiesta de la Trashumancia, after the Spanish Parliament recognized the traditional routes used by shepherds to graze their livestock.
Just a few centuries ago, the route took them through quiet countryside, but today it sees them passing through some of the busiest areas of the city, including Madrid’s main square, the Plaza Mayor.

Onlookers took photos and videos with their mobile phones, and some children tentatively stretched out their hands to stroke the sheep.
Many were surprised by the unexpected sight in a city that is usually crowded with traffic.
“It’s crazy to have so many sheep, I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s a great way to learn about Spanish history and Spanish culture,” English teacher Maria Kouriabalis, a 22-year-old American, has been telling Reuters I lived in Madrid for a month.
