Following the sold-out “Tosca,” Opera SB continues its 2022-23 season with a new production of Rossini’s “La scala di seta,” by Santa Barbara-based soprano Jana Starring McIntyre.
There will be a public performance on Sunday, November 13th at 2:30pm and a free student matinee at 10am. Monday, November 14th.
In Rossini’s 1812 bel canto comedy The Silk Ladder, the beautiful Julia (McIntyre) lowers the silk ladder from her window every night, allowing her secretly married Deauville to climb into the bedroom.
A series of misunderstandings turns their little love nest into a circus of relatives, suitors and servants, plotting, eavesdropping and finally blissfully reconciled in Rossini’s sonic fireworks.
McIntyre, winner of the George London Foundation’s top award and a finalist for the Metropolitan Opera National Committee, was praised by Opera News for her “dancers’ grace, mercurial wit and vibrant soprano voice.”
During her young career, McIntyre has worked with opera companies such as the Santa Fe Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, and Palm Beach Opera.
In April 2021, she starred as Don Pasquale in the company’s drive-thru production, and in January 2022, she starred at the Opera Santa Barbara and made her debut Appeared.
Tenor Christian Sanders, who made his Opera SB debut as a singer in “Il Tabarro” in November 2021, returns as the dashing Dorvil, Giulia’s secret husband. The role of sly servant Germano will be played by baritone Efrain Solis, who will play Mark’s “Cruzar la cara de la luna” in Santa Barbara in September 2021.
Tenor Benjamin Brecher, chair of the music department at UCSB, portrays Dormont, Giulia’s thwarted guardian. Chrisman Studio Artists mezzo Christina Pezzarossi and baritone Matthew Peterson round out the cast as Lucilla and Blansac.
Set in a tailor shop in the 1930s, this new production was designed and directed by Joshua Shaw, founding artistic director of the Pacific Opera Project in Los Angeles. Shaw has directed Opera SB’s Barber of Seville and Don Pasquale in 2018 and 2021, and was named a Top 30 Innovator of Classical Music by American Music Magazine in 2017.
Shaw has been credited with making opera accessible through innovative, entertaining and irreverent productions by the Pacific Opera Project.
“There’s nothing I love more than a good bel canto comedy,” Shaw said. “‘La scala di seta’ is full of delightfully clever arias and ensembles (pun intended) tailored for opera pranks. We’ve updated the setting to be a 1930s tailor shop, a ‘fit’ location and pair of namesake Explanation of the “Silk Ladder” above.”
Guest conductor Alexandra Enyart made her Opera SB debut with “As One” earlier this year and was hailed by the Chicago Theater Review as “one of Chicago’s greatest opera gifts.”
“Throughout history, lovers have been separated by class, race, religion, gender and many other reasons,” Enyat said. “This piece is an important reminder that love will find a way, even if it has to be accessed through a window through a ladder made of silk.”
“La scala di seta” is the second of four operas by the Santa Barbara Opera for the 2022-23 season. It was followed by Jack Perla and Jessica Murphy-Moo’s 2015 drama “American Dream” on February 18, and “Valkyrie” on April 23, which was Richard Wagner’s “American Dream.” The second Jonathan Dorff and Graham Vick version of The Ring of the Nibelung’s 1990 stripped down version.
Customers have two options for purchasing tickets: buy full-price tickets and choose their seat at the Lobero box office (online, Monday-Friday, 10am-5pm by calling 805-963-0761, or in person during the same hour ); or name it at your own price! Tickets on the OSB website. Opera Santa Barbara and Lobero will assign them seats.
The 90-minute performance will be sung in Italian with an English translation projected above the stage. No intermission.
