Emirates News Agency – COP 28, digital policy and healthcare top US-UAE Business Council board meeting

ABU DHABI, 24th October, 2022 (WAM) — Waleed Al Muhairi, Deputy Group CEO, Mubadala Investments, and Dr. Tomislav Mihaljevic, CEO and President, Cleveland Clinic, co-chair the 15th US-UAE Business Council The annual board meeting was at the St. Regis Hotel, followed by a reception hosted by Al Muhairi.

Executives from US and UAE companies, as well as partners and guests from the UAE Embassy in the US, US Embassy in the UAE, Ministry of Health – Abu Dhabi, COP 28 Organizing Team, AI, Digital Economy, and remote work applications Program Office.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the global economic downturn, U.S. and UAE executives highlighted a vibrant bilateral commercial relationship and the UAE’s growing importance as a global hub.

Business leaders highlighted their commitment to working with the UAE, where they see huge opportunities for growth.

Al Muhairi shares his outlook on the global macroeconomic environment in times of inflation and monetary tightening. He also addressed the importance of the U.S.-UAE trade and investment relationship, and highlighted Mubadala’s continued commitment to U.S. investment opportunities.

His colleague Dr Mihaljevic drew attention to the “silent but global health crisis” brought on by the pandemic, including a severe shortage of skilled health care professionals and rising health care costs.

Hana Al Rostamani, Co-Chairman of the Business Council and Chief Executive Officer of First Abu Dhabi Bank Group, cited some positive economic trends in the UAE and the region, despite the recent IMF/World Bank meeting on the global macroeconomic situation. A pessimistic assessment was made. Her co-chairman, PepsiCo Africa, Middle East and South Asia CEO Eugene Willemsen spoke about the UAE’s rapid growth and the strategic vision of its leadership, citing Expo 2020 Dubai as an example.

Emirates Senior Vice President Badr Abbas reviewed the resilience and rapid recovery of the aviation industry, while highlighting Emirates’ expanding presence in the US, including through a new partnership with United Airlines.

Yousef Al Otaiba, UAE Ambassador to the US, and Sean Murphy, US Chargé d’affaires a.i. to the UAE, stressed the importance of commerce and trade to a dynamic US-UAE relationship.

COP 28 Director-General Ambassador Majid Al Suwaidi briefed the working group on the UAE’s plans for COP 28 and the role the private sector can play.

On behalf of Minister Omar Al Olama, Saqr Binghalib, Executive Director of the Office of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy and Remote Work Applications at the Ministry of Artificial Intelligence, provided an update on the UAE’s forward-looking digital policies and laws.

Dr. Jamal Al Kaabi, Abu Dhabi’s Deputy Minister of Health, outlined Abu Dhabi’s healthcare industry growth and development strategy, which includes partnerships with major US companies.
