South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it detected North Korea fired a missile presumed to be an intercontinental ballistic missile from an area near the capital Pyongyang at around 7:40 a.m., and then fired two more from the nearby city of Kacheon an hour later. short-range missiles. towards its eastern waters.

Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada said one of the North Korean missiles had a range of up to 2,000 kilometers (1,200 miles) and his army lost track of the weapon after it had flown about 750 kilometers (460 miles).

The Japanese government was initially concerned that a suspected ICBM would fly over its northern territory, but later revised its assessment to say there was no overflight. Hamada said the missile “disappeared” from Japanese radars over the sea between the Korean peninsula and Japan.

Choi Yong-soo, a South Korean navy captain who handles public affairs for the Ministry of Defense in Seoul, gave no specific answer when asked if the military thought the missile could fail if it exploded in mid-air, saying the test was still being analyzed.
