New York [US]3 November (ANI): 14 million people have been forcibly displaced since the Ukrainian invasion began on February 24 this year, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Philippe Grandi.
“The Russian invasion of Ukraine has caused the fastest and largest displacement in decades. Some 14 million people have been forced from their homes since 24 February,” the UN High Commissioner for Refugees said in a briefing to the Security Council on Wednesday.

Philippe Grandi has warned that Ukrainians will face one of the harshest winters in the world in extremely difficult circumstances. “Humanitarian organisations have greatly expanded their response, but much remains to be done, starting with ending this senseless war,” he said.
As the war in Ukraine continues to prolong, the UN refugee chief says the damage caused by attacks on civilian infrastructure is rapidly making the humanitarian response look like a drop in a sea of needs.
Under the able government’s able leadership, UNHCR’s work is increasingly focused on helping displaced people in Ukraine, he said. Among its neighbors, Moldova still needs special attention because of its vulnerability.
“Meanwhile, in the EU we have seen an open, well-managed and above all shared refugee response, but many of the statements that are often repeated by some politicians have turned out to be wrong: Europe is full; relocation is impossible of; there is no public support for refugees,” he added.
Regarding UNHCR’s response to the Ukraine crisis, Grandi said they were maintaining a high level of preparedness for further population movements within and outside Ukraine, given the different possible scenarios and the scope and limitations of humanitarian assistance.
In the past 12 months alone, it has responded to 37 emergencies worldwide in countries including Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Myanmar and Syria. (ANI)
