Twitter Inc., which fired about half of the company after its $44 billion takeover of Elon Musk on Friday, is now contacting dozens of employees who lost their jobs and asking them to return to work.
Some of those asked to return were wrongfully fired, according to two people familiar with the matter. Others were fired before management realized their work and experience might be necessary to build the new features Musk envisioned, said the people, who asked not to be named when discussing private information.
Twitter this week cut nearly 3,700 jobs by email as a way to cut costs after closing its acquisition of Musk in late October. Many employees lost their jobs after learning that they were suddenly suspended after accessing company-wide systems like email and Slack. Asking employees to return shows how rushed and chaotic the process has been.
A Twitter spokesman did not respond to a request for comment. Platformer has previously reported on Twitter’s plans to hire employees.
“Regarding the layoffs at Twitter, unfortunately, when the company is losing more than $4 million a day, there is no choice,” Musk tweeted on Friday.

Over the weekend, Twitter launched a new Twitter Blue subscription plan that offers a verification checkmark to anyone paying $8 a month. The company also said it will soon roll out other features, including half the ads, the ability to post longer videos and the ability to get prioritized rankings in replies, mentions and searches.
The New York Times reported on Sunday that Twitter will delay the change to the checkmark until after Tuesday’s midterm elections after users and employees worried that the program could be abused to sow discord.
