Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt (Reuters) – United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan said on Monday the UAE will be a responsible supplier of oil and gas for as long as the world needs it . Two-week climate talks in Egypt.

He added that the Gulf state is one of OPEC’s largest producers but also invests in renewable energy, focusing on reducing the carbon impact of its fossil fuel output.

“The UAE is considered a responsible energy supplier and will continue to play that role as long as the world needs oil and gas,” he said.

“The UAE’s oil and gas is one of the least carbon-intensive in the world, and we will continue to focus on reducing the sector’s carbon emissions.”

The Conference of the Parties (COP) in Egypt is the latest in a decades-long effort by the United Nations to try to curb climate change caused by the use of fossil fuels.

Next year’s COP28 summit will be hosted by the UAE at Expo City in Dubai and will assess the implementation of the 2015 Paris climate agreement, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The UAE president said his country was one of the first in the Gulf to announce a plan to be carbon neutral by 2050, signing a deal last week $100 billion A deal with the U.S. aims to add 100 gigawatts of renewable energy globally by 2035.
