Captain America star Chris Evans has been named the Sexiest Man by People Magazine.
People’s Choice was announced Monday night on Stephen Colbert’s Late Night Show and the magazine’s website.
Evans played Captain America in Marvel’s superhero films for nearly a decade, taking the baton from another Avenger, Paul Rudd.
“My mom would be delighted,” he told the magazine’s publication on Friday. “She’s proud of what I’ve done, but that’s something she can really brag about.”
He also knew he was likely to be teased by close friends. “Really, it’s just bullying,” he joked in an interview. “The time is ripe for harassment.”
Those likely to question him include co-stars and previous Sexiest Man winners such as Rudd, Ryan Reynolds and Chris Hemsworth.
Hemsworth, who played Thor in a Marvel movie, was the first Avengers to receive the People’s Annual honor, which was first awarded to Mel Gibson in 1985.
Other recipients include John Legend, Dwayne Johnson, Idris Elba, Adam Levine, Richard Gere, Channing Tatum and David Beckham.
People spoke to Evans, 41, at a farmhouse in Georgia, and the actor talked about finding a better work-life balance. “The most enjoyable aspect of my career right now is feeling safe enough to get my foot off the gas,” he said.
Evans’ first film role was in 2000’s The New Arrivals, where he played superhero Johnny Storm in the two Fantastic Four films released in 2005 and 2007. But he came to prominence in 2011 with the release of Captain America: The First Avenger.

Since then, he’s played a healthy superhero in 10 Marvel movies, dropping his shield after saving the universe in 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
Evans has become a very rich star, voicing the character of Buzz Lightyear in Pixar’s Lightyear film and playing an abuser who tries to kill Reynolds in Netflix’s “Grey Man,” which hit theaters this year. Mad Assassin.
The actor told PEOPLE he was thinking about getting married and starting a family, saying: “It’s definitely what I want.”
He said, however, that he did not wish to speak publicly about his private life. “Something you want just for you, or just for my family and my friends.”
The Boston native also continues to work on A Starting Point, a civic engagement site he co-founded in 2020.
As Evans charts the next part of his life and career, he fully expects the honor of the people to be a milestone.
“When I get older and sag, I can look back and say ‘I remember that time…'” Evans said. “I’m fortunate to be involved in discussions in any capacity.”
