THON Director Thursday: Meet THON 2023 Entertainment Director Rene Richardson

[ad_1]

Name: Rene Richardson

Main: Master of Integrated Accounting, minor: Legal environment for business and management information systems

Past THON Experience:

THON 2020 Entertainment Committee Member, THON 2021 Entertainment DJ Captain, THON 2022 Entertainment Pep Rally Captain, THON 2023 Entertainment Director (current)

Say an interesting, weird, or quirky fact about yourself:

I’ve been playing the saxophone for 12 years! It was definitely forced as a kid, but I’ve grown up and love it so much! I now do occasional events and have been with Penn State’s Pep Band for the past 3 years.

What made you want to apply for a directorship at THON 2023?

One day we will dance together to celebrate healing. I want to be a director of THON to help make that happen – that’s why I’m THON. I believe entertainment provides THON with a vibrant and lively spirit that helps families and volunteers thrive in pre-THON and THON weekend events. We are not the ones who interact directly with families, fundraise or provide research, but the work we do makes an impact in our own special way. THON has given me so much and I want to give my everything back to this organization.

What are your responsibilities as a THON Director?

As Director of Entertainment, I lead a 25-person captain’s committee that provides music and live entertainment at THON events throughout the year. The Entertainment Director also serves as the primary point of contact for production management at the Bryce Jordan Center and is responsible for contracting sound companies and performances in accordance with university policy. This includes setting up the stage, lighting and sound for THON Weekend. We ensure the best experience for viewers and families through our livestreams, both in person and digitally.

What would you like to implement in your position this year that is unique and different from previous years?

We’re currently working on it, but I’m looking forward to implementing audience feedback at the end of THON weekend! We get feedback from the dancers and make changes based on that, so I believe we can do the same for the audience and have a great experience for everyone!

What makes your committee so cool, fun and/or important?

I believe each committee is important in advancing THON’s mission and goals! Entertaining is especially fun because we get to do a lot of behind-the-scenes work! We understand everything that’s going on at each event and are there to help. I also love the games we play, our job is basically to make sure everyone has fun!

What is your overall goal for THON 2022 with your committee?

I’m excited to see THON and the Entertainment Council continue to advance THON’s mission and our diversity, equity and inclusion efforts this year. I hope we can support and support our organizations and community groups. One of my main goals is to continue to get audience feedback on THON weekend and see how we can continue to improve everyone’s experience. I can’t wait to see how I can support my team in achieving their goals and vision for this year and see how far they can go.

Why did you choose THON?

I think one day we’ll dance to celebrate healing! The work we do together is having a major impact on current and future generations.

What is your favorite THON memory?

THON 2020 was my first THON weekend. I remember being a committee member and hearing about how awesome THON weekends are, but I really can’t imagine it. My first shift on the weekend was on the floor before the dancers got up. This is the best moment for me. There was a video that captured the awe and wonder in my eyes as I entered the floor for the first time.

According to Onward State tradition, if you could be any dinosaur, which would you be? Why?

Pachycephalosaurus. It’s one of the longest names for dinosaurs and I don’t even know how to pronounce it, but it looks cool!

Dana is a senior studying public relations. She’s from 570, and yes, she’s seen The Office. Her passion for life includes drinking unsweetened iced tea and spreading her love of farming (yee haw)!
