Japanese IHI firm Enoc considers green ammonia plant in UAE

Dubai-based Enoch Group signed a memorandum of understanding with Japanese heavy industry manufacturer IHI Corporation to explore the establishment of a low-carbon hydrogen and low-carbon ammonia supply chain in the UAE.

The move is in line with the UAE’s overall efforts to diversify its energy sources into a clean energy model that the world can emulate.

The fuel produced will be exported to Japan and supplied in the UAE and throughout the region for refuelling and other uses.

As part of the agreement, the parties will perform corresponding studies in successive phases of green ammonia production in the UAE, including pre-feasibility and feasibility studies for the first full-scale production plant, pre-FEED (pre-final engineering design) and demonstration plants FEED studies, and pre-FEED and FEED for full-scale production plants.

The agreement was signed by Saif Humaid Al Falasi, CEO of Enoc Group, and Jun Kobayashi, Executive Officer, Solutions and Business Development Headquarters, General Manager, IHI Corporation.

“At Enoc, we will continue to explore partnerships to protect the future for future generations. Our partnership with IHI demonstrates our commitment to supporting the UAE’s energy transition efforts while advancing Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050,” said Al Falasi.

“We are delighted to be working with IHI Corporation to explore the potential of green ammonia production in the UAE,” he added.

This partnership is in line with Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and UAE Energy Strategy 2050 to meet the country’s economic requirements and environmental goals.

In addition, it supports the UAE’s Strategic Initiative for Net-Zero Emissions by 2050, a national initiative to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

“We believe green ammonia is one of the most practical and economical carbon-free fuel solutions, featuring high volumetric hydrogen density and easy handling,” Kobayashi said.

Green ammonia, which can be achieved by combining and reacting green hydrogen and nitrogen at high temperature and pressure, can potentially reduce global carbon emissions and be used in transportation, power generation and industrial sectors

“The UAE is well-positioned to produce and export green ammonia, with its abundance of renewable energy and strong maritime trade infrastructure, which reinforces its position as a key hub for global shipping. This collaboration will help achieve Japan and UAE’s carbon reduction targets,” he added.
