Abu Dhabi: The 14th edition of the Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championships kicked off at the Jiu-Jitsu Arena in Zayed Sports City on Friday, with athletes from around the world competing in the children and disabled categories.
Under the patronage of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, one of the largest and most prestigious events on the global calendar will run until November 19, with more than 100 players from 5,000 athletes from 5 countries compete in the UAE capital.
Athletes from the Kids 1, 2, 3, Infants, Juniors, Juniors and Youth categories and the Para Jiu-Jitsu category competed in a series of competitions on 11 mats in Friday’s competition, with the UAE team taking the medals Kazakhstan and Russia were separated Second and third place.
In the academy and club competition, UAEJJ took the lead, Kazakhstan National Academy was the runner-up, and the Gladiators were close behind.
Mohammed Salem Al-Dhaheri, Vice-President of the UAE Jiu-Jitsu Federation, said: “The recently held Jiu-Jitsu World Championships in Abu Dhabi continues to receive acclaim from around the world. The next champion will be held in the world in less than a week after the event. Come back in the presence of thousands of players from all four corners of the world.”

Al-Dhaheri congratulated all the winners on their outstanding performances on the mat today and praised the large crowds that had gathered in the gallery to support the athletes.
According to Meera Al-Suwaidi, a member of the Federal National Assembly, the tournament’s high attendance shows that it has been a success.
“It is important to note the wonderful atmosphere on the first day of the 14th Abu Dhabi World Professional Jiu-Jitsu Championships. The intense performance of the contestants, the presence of parents and the large audience in the stands all suggest that the current edition will stand out,” she said.
The parents of several athletes participating in the tournament were delighted with the atmosphere on the opening day of the competition, one of them being the father of bronze medalist Hamdan Basalum.
“My son Hamdan won a bronze medal, which boosted his morale and self-confidence tremendously. We thank the wise leadership for their continued support of Jiu-Jitsu and the organizers of this wonderful event,” he said.
Elsewhere, Ezzedine Bassam’s mother said it was her first appearance at the tournament.
“Jiu-Jitsu is a great game, and we chose it for my son Izzedine to play because it gives players a quick sense of the atmosphere of the game,” she said.
The tournament is characterized by the large presence of the Brazilian community. Mikey Ritter, a black belt in jiu-jitsu from Brazil, has signed up his three children for the championship: “Marcelo, Ryan and Maria are three of my children who are competing today and they are all passionate about this activity. As A jiu-jitsu black belt, I can empathize with them and give them all the support they need to pursue their goals.”
Brazilian Hercili Silva, who has competed in the Pala Jiu-Jitsu division, says the sport has given him new life after losing a leg in an accident.
“I had a lot of friends who shared the success stories of the sport, so I decided to get involved. It changed my life. I now show myself to the world as a medalist,” he said.
