Oscar Piastri will be released by Alpine for a Formula 1 testing mission with McLaren in Abu Dhabi.
Long-time alpine teenager Piastri, a Formula 2 champion last season, was the subject of a contract dispute earlier this year after he refused the team’s confirmation of his status as a driver for 2023.
Sources say Alpine had wanted to put Piastelli at Williams, with Fernando Alonso expected to stay, instead the Australian youngster has signed a multi-year deal with McLaren. contract.
Formula 1’s Contract Recognition Committee ultimately backed McLaren, but Piastri has been contracted to Alpine until 2022, despite having been factory-based since the summer break and has not raced in a grand prix.
Formula 1 will undergo a one-day test at Yas Marina Circuit on Tuesday (November 22).
Drivers are traditionally still under contract until December 31, but usually these switching teams are given early access to new employers.
Despite the initial hostility surrounding Piastri’s move, he was given the green light to test for McLaren in Abu Dhabi, allowing him to experience the 2022-spec MCL36.
It was confirmed on Saturday that Piastrie was cleared to conduct private testing of McLaren’s 2021-spec MCL35M at Paul Ricard last week.
“I can confirm that we have finally reached a settlement that allowed us to put the Oscar in our car at Paul Ricard last week and test it privately,” McLaren boss Andreas Seidl said.
“This will allow us to start working with Oscar on Monday in Abu Dhabi, which means we can put him in a young driver test in Abu Dhabi, which is great for us and for Oscar.”
Alpine boss Otmar Szafnauer added: “The season is coming to an end and it’s time to strike a deal, we did it and we are delighted that Oscar will be able to start his McLaren career and test after the last race.”
