New White Paper Explores Upcoming Innovative Solutions

[ad_1]

WILMINGTON, Delaware, Nov. 14, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — As the carbon footprint of the video entertainment industry balloons, surpassing even that of the airline industry, an important question is how to make sustainability key Elements of video content creation? A new white paper released today by InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ: IDCC) and written by Futuresource Consulting explores the need for the video entertainment industry to lead positive climate action, set higher standards for energy efficiency, and integrate mitigation Energy consumption of the end-to-end video chain.

white paper, Sustainability of Video Entertainment, discusses how the content industry can embrace sustainable change by leveraging enabling technologies and strategies that actively promote a greener production environment. Many in the industry have high hopes for developments including remote production; overall greater efficiency in delivering IP-based services; rise of virtual production; cloud-based solutions; environment-optimized outside broadcast (OB) trucks; pervasively efficient data Center; and the manufacturing drive to improve the efficiency and certification of consumer products through transparent energy certification.

“This article comes as industry stakeholders consider how to address the industry’s carbon footprint and, in response, develop much-needed solutions to minimize the environmental impact of content creation, exchange and delivery,” said Erik Distinguished Scientist, InterDigital Reinhard said. “This reflects the industry’s view that the video entertainment industry needs to do more to measure and address the more sustainable operations it can make for the video content we all love.”

The paper reveals:

  • The carbon footprint of production is huge: the average carbon footprint of a medium-sized film is 769 metric tons of CO2e, while the emissions generated by large-scale films are much larger, at 1,081 metric tons per production
  • An average day of filming produces more than one person’s annual carbon footprint, while an average hour of filming is equivalent to the carbon footprint of a return flight from London to New York
  • Going cloud-native saves energy: Production services are highly virtualized, so more energy-efficient equipment can be leveraged than traditional on-premises setups
  • Data centers around the world are getting more efficient: Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) averages 1.5 today, but newer installations enable better performance
  • With over a billion hours of content consumed daily on a single streaming platform, the video streaming industry’s annual carbon footprint now exceeds that of the airline industry

“The video industry is now focused on improving the sustainability of visual entertainment. From filming and content creation, to broadcast distribution and internet streaming, to the consumer devices themselves, all elements of the delivery chain are actively increasing efficiency,” said Chief Technology, Futuresource Consulting Analyst Simon Forrest said. “However, challenges remain: on the current trajectory, global TV energy use alone could increase by 5% by 2026 as consumers upgrade to higher resolution screens and transition to 4K HDR video. There is a clear opportunity for further innovation in video encoding and delivery mechanisms to help mitigate this potential growth.”

The paper argues that energy-aware streaming protocols promise more than 50% energy savings per hour of content, and InterDigital is an active contributor to innovative solutions in this area. InterDigital’s Video Lab researches solutions and technologies to reduce energy consumption in visual media, develops key energy-aware image processing methods that can help reduce energy consumption without altering visual quality, and ITU (International Telecommunication Union) Energy Perceptual activity, DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting), MPEG (Motion Picture Experts Group) and SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers), and foundational support for new video codecs such as VVC (Versatile Video Coding), which has significant Bitrate reduction and more efficient transmission of 4K UHD (Ultra High Definition) content.
