Shots fired at US embassy vehicle in Haiti | World News

[ad_1]

A spokesman for the U.S. embassy in Haiti said shots were fired at a U.S. embassy vehicle on Monday, and Haitian police and commercial vehicles were also affected.

“No embassy personnel were injured,” information officer Catherine Edwards said in a statement. “A Haitian commercial driver accompanying the convoy was injured. However, the injuries are not life-threatening.”

The statement did not identify the attacker. Gang violence is rife in the Caribbean country, with a local media report blaming the attack on the 400 Mawozo gang, which kidnapped a group of American and Canadian missionaries in 2021.

The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Haitian government spokesman Jean-Junior Joseph, when consulted on the report, said the information was accurate.

Haitian national police this month took back control of the Varreux fuel terminal, which has been blocked by the G9 gang alliance for six weeks, causing fuel shortages and sparking a humanitarian crisis.

Since then, fuel has slowly started returning to gas stations.
