The Carroll County Arts Council is hosting its first-ever Black American Film Festival this fall at the Carroll Arts Center in Westminster. This free festival is a celebration of Black storytelling, with a special focus on stories that offer a dynamic perspective on the Black experience.
Curated and hosted by Erin Watley, Associate Professor of Communication and Film at McDaniel College, the remaining three films in the series highlight black romance, liberation, fame and more.These films are shown on select Fridays in December at 7:30pm
Each film is accompanied by a short introduction to provide background information and a discussion with Whatley after the screening.
Whatley’s teaching and research interests focus on how to practice everyday skills that can reduce oppressive systems (racism, sexism, transphobia, classism, obesity phobia, etc.). Facilitating intercultural dialogue, encouraging difficult conversations, teaching media literacy, and analyzing African American popular culture are her specialties.

A young woman with supernatural abilities flees back to her family and the farmhouse she abandoned long ago. There, while being pursued by the local sheriff, she begins to mend her broken relationship with her mother and daughter, and learns that the strength she needs has always been within her.
The film will be preceded by the screening of the short film “The Love of Hair” (2019).
