November 19 (UPI) — Members of APEC formally condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine at the group’s first face-to-face meeting in four years on Saturday.

“This year, we have also witnessed further adverse effects of the war in Ukraine on the global economy. Discussions took place on this issue. We reiterated our position expressed in other forums, including the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly,” the group said in its statement express.
“Most members strongly condemned the war in Ukraine and emphasized that it was causing enormous human suffering and exacerbating existing vulnerabilities in the global economy — limiting growth, fueling inflation, disrupting supply chains, exacerbating energy and food insecurity, and exacerbating financial stability risk.”
However, the group noted that not all of APEC’s 21 members agree.
“There are other views and different assessments of the situation and sanctions,” they declared. “Recognizing that APEC is not a forum for addressing security issues, we acknowledge that security issues can have a significant impact on the global economy.”
The US, Japan and other APEC members have imposed sanctions on Russia, but others, such as China, have not.

The forum also reaffirmed its commitment to fight the outbreak Coronavirus disease Pandemic.
“We continue to mobilize our resources to fight the COVID-19 pandemic and strengthen our systems to prevent, prepare for, and respond to future health threats. We are determined to ensure widespread immunity of our people to COVID-19 as a global public good,” APEC said in a statement.
“We must further strengthen the public health workforce, recognizing the enormous contribution they make to protect the lives of our people and preserve their health. We should continue our efforts to improve digital solutions and access to health services, and strengthen health systems to achieve universal health coverage.”
