In preparation for the outstanding version of the Dubai Youth Theatre Festival in 2021, aiming to inspire youth theaters in the UAE based on the status quo imposed by COVID-19, the Dubai Culture and Arts Bureau (Dubai Culture) held a virtual meeting that brought members of the board of directors and a group of private theaters in the Emirates. Outstanding young local theater talents gathered to ensure that a special version is presented that meets both the emirate’s ambitions and the current situation.
Fatma Al Jalaf, acting director of the Department of Culture and Performing Arts in Dubai, emphasized that although most cultural activities have resumed, necessary precautions still need to be taken to ensure the safety of everyone. To this end, Dubai Culture hosted a meeting to discuss the content, format and new mechanisms of the Dubai Youth Theatre Festival in 2021 in line with preventive measures.
Al Jallaf talked about the goals of the conference. He said: “As facilitators of the emirate’s cultural and creative sector, we recognize the harmony that exists between state theaters; we have a responsibility to provide a strong foundation for UAE theaters, especially youth; and Their cooperation with the Authority. The purpose is to create high-level national drama works that are more in line with the ambitions of the emirate and the entire UAE, while also keeping pace with the development of global drama. Therefore, this conference is held to promote the culture of Dubai and the local UAE. Build cohesion between the theaters and let them organize the festival in a way that adapts to the current social and economic situation.
She added: “We have always been keen to benefit from the energy of youth by providing a platform for their ideas and visions. We have provided some young theater talents with the opportunity to participate in this conference, and put forward their suggestions and opinions to support their Stance, and based on our commitment to the importance of these ideas and suggestions for enriching the festival and to satisfy the wishes of young playwrights who are eager to return to the physical theater.”
The meeting was held through Zoom, and the participants summarized their ideas in a positive and harmonious atmosphere. Discussed and reached agreement on many ideas for the 2021 holiday, including a new mechanism for holiday events based on the epidemic, the location and time of the holiday, and the location of the event from the 19th to the 25th November 2021.
Participants also reached an agreement on the theme of the youth drama works that will participate in the festival. During the meeting, the importance of cooperation and coordination between private theaters and the administration in terms of organization and voluntary services was also discussed.
The meeting also discussed the support that Dubai Culture will provide in organizing the 2021 film festival, selecting the subject of the work and its required creative needs, and determining the conditions that must be met to participate in the work. Participants also praised the Authority’s efforts to ensure the best continuity of the festival and the restoration and activation of the Youth Theatre. Dubai Culture has also been praised for its role in nurturing youth skills, nurturing and accepting promising talents, inspiring them to continue their passion for the theater field, thereby building the theater of the future and elevating the UAE theater to become part of the creative economy.
