IT departments are more responsible than ever for business innovation in the UAE, ManageEngine research finds

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — ManageEngine, the enterprise IT management arm of Zoho Corporation, today announced its results IT at work: 2022 and beyond study. This newly released data, involving IT decision makers (ITDMs) and business decision makers (BDMs), examines the democratization of IT and the ability of IT teams to influence business decisions in large and enterprise-level organizations in the UAE.

According to the study, increased collaboration between IT departments and other teams within the organization may help non-IT employees now have more IT knowledge than they did before 2020. IT structures within organizations are increasingly decentralized, with non-IT departments now enjoying autonomy over technology decisions.

However, any fears of a diminished role for IT teams were dispelled, as research has found that they play a key role in building tomorrow’s businesses. Some 76 percent of ITDMs expect IT to play a larger role in shaping the organization’s overall strategy in the next 5 years. This is 11% higher than the global average.

The success of the IT team in its role has a significant impact on the success of the organization, with more than 91 percent of respondents citing a direct correlation between the two. Additionally, IT professionals are increasingly expected to be innovators, with more than nine in 10 (91%) respondents agreeing that IT is more responsible than ever for business innovation.

Key Findings of the Study

1. Increased collaboration leads to technical autonomy of non-IT teams.

  • The vast majority (90%) of respondents indicated that collaboration between IT teams and other departments has increased over the past two years.
  • More than four-fifths (84%) of respondents believe that non-IT employees in their organization are more IT-savvy now than they were before 2020.
  • Some 44 percent of organizations have already decentralized their IT structures, and another 49 percent are currently attempting to do so.
  • Nearly all (98%) BDMs say their department has autonomy in making technology decisions. This autonomy involves not only buying software (64%) and equipment (47%), but also hiring technical talent (62%).

2. Defend against cyberattacks with artificial intelligence and machine learning (ML).

  • Some 91 percent of respondents said AI and machine learning technologies will play an important role in strengthening their organization’s IT security framework.
  • Nearly all (95%) BDMs say their organizations have invested in AI and ML technologies, and on average, do so for more than one use case. A significant portion of BDMs report that they are using AI to prevent cyberattacks (52%).
  • When it comes to defending against cyberattacks, IT and security teams have the responsibility. Some 73 percent of decision makers (including ITDMs and BDMs) say IT and security teams have a responsibility to protect the organization.

3. Skills development and talent retention.

  • Two in five (41%) ITDMs in the UAE say they are actively looking for a new job, while almost as many (45%) say they are less loyal to their current employer than they were two years ago.
  • When it comes to what ITDMs want from their roles over the next five years, these are cited as the most important: the potential to learn new skills (55%), the ability to take on higher roles (49%) and Ability to lead change (48%).
  • Roughly half of IT decision makers say that if their compensation does not at least keep pace with inflation (54%), if there is no potential for advancement/advancement (52%), or if they do not have flexible working models (50%), or any other Existing benefits cited, are all cancelled.
