“It was a horrible night. As you can imagine,” Will Smith said Monday on Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show”.

The “Men in Black” star took to the Oscars stage and slapped Rock after he made jokes about Will Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith being bald. Will Smith then returned to his seat and yelled at Locke: “Don’t put my wife’s name in yours. [expletive] mouth. “

Moments later, Will Smith gave an awkward acceptance speech when he won the Best Actor Oscar for “King Richard,” and audiences at the Dolby Theater and television in Los Angeles were still in shock.

The movie star told “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah that he’s been dealing with some personal issues, but he didn’t reveal, “It was a pent-up anger for a long time.”

“Guess what I’ll say, you never know what someone’s going through,” Will Smith said. “You know, right now in the audience, you’re sitting next to strangers. Someone’s mother died last week. Someone’s kid got sick. Someone just lost their job. Someone just found out their spouse cheated. Like all Like these things, they’re strangers, you just don’t know what’s going on with people.

“I went through a few things that night, but it didn’t justify my actions at all.

“That’s not who I want to be,” he added.

Will Smith said he understood how shocking it was for people to watch the encounter.

He said he found it particularly difficult when his 9-year-old nephew asked him about it.

“He was the cutest little boy,” Will Smith said. “We got home and he stayed up late watching his Uncle Will. We sat in my kitchen and he sat on my lap with his Oscar in his hand and he said, ‘Uncle Will, why did you hit that people?’

He joked that his reaction was: “Damn! Why are you doing The Oprah Show on me?”

Will Smith has largely been out of the public eye since the incident, but he’s now promoting his new movie, “Liberated,” which will debut on Apple TV+ on December 9.

He has publicly apologized for slapping Locke.

“I’m deeply remorseful, and I’m trying to be remorseful without being ashamed of myself,” Will Smith said in a video in july.

In April, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences banned the actor from attending the Oscars or any other academy event for 10 years.
