New Orleans native Downing, an award-winning singer, musician, composer, author and poet, presents Louisiana Roots concerts and author visits for children, as well as keynotes and workshops for educators worldwide .

Free computer help: Northstar Digital Literacy is a service that defines the essential skills needed to perform tasks on a computer and online, and library patrons can access its instructional modules.
“People without basic computer literacy are at a disadvantage when looking for jobs because employers expect basic computer skills for most jobs, including many entry-level positions,” said Jefferson Parish Librarian Jessica Stynes. “We joined Northstar because it will help our customers have a better chance of finding a job and being successful.”
The online self-directed module assesses an individual’s ability to perform tasks based on these skills. These include basic computer digital literacy standards and modules in three main areas:
- Basic computer skills (basic computer skills, Internet basics, using email, Windows, Mac OS).
- Basic software skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Use technology in everyday life (social media, information literacy, and creative job search).
JPL patrons can take the test online at www.digitalliteracyassessments.org. At the end of each test, users receive a page of results listing skills learned and areas for improvement.
The modules are based on a basic set of benchmarks of computing competence. These standards help ensure that computing courses teach adult learners the skills they need to succeed in the workplace.
To gain a certificate for one or more modules, adults must take the exam at an approved exam venue in a supervised environment.
