World News | Pakistan again tops list of countries at risk of mass killings: US report

[ad_1]

Islamabad [Pakistan]Dec 3 (ANI): For the third time in a row, Pakistan has topped the list of countries most likely to experience mass killings, according to the latest assessment by the US think tank Early Warning Project.

In its 28-page report, the Early Warning Project said Pakistan faced multiple security and human rights challenges, including rising violence by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, movement.

The Early Warning Project is a joint initiative of the Simon-Skjodt Center for Genocide Prevention at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Dickey Center for International Understanding at Dartmouth College.

Other Asian countries in the top ten include Myanmar in second and Yemen in third.

The Early Warning Project is a research organization that aims to identify countries at risk of mass violence. The report cited violence by local Taliban affiliates as one of the main challenges facing a country already facing political and economic crisis.

Notably, the report comes as the Pakistani Taliban (TTP) canceled a ceasefire agreement with the government this week. TTP ended a ceasefire with the government in June and ordered militants to carry out attacks across the country.

“As military operations against jihadists in different regions are underway […] Therefore, you must carry out attacks anywhere in the country,” the banned group said in a statement.

The Islamist group’s violence has been picking up pace in recent months, with at least six police officers involved in the heaviest attack last month in the Lakki Marwat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) killed.

The TTP, an offshoot of Pakistan, is a close ally of the Taliban in Afghanistan and is listed as a foreign terrorist organization by the United States and the United Nations. It has between 4,000 and 6,500 fighters in Afghanistan, according to United Nations estimates. It spread beyond the tribal lands and reached the cities of Pakistan.

“The Early Warning Project judges that, as of late 2021, the Taliban Movement in Pakistan and associated militias are engaged in mass killings; this risk assessment addresses the likelihood of the onset of new, distinct non-state-led or state-led incidents, rather than continued or increased ongoing incidents ,” the report said.
