In the spirit of UAE National Day, an Arabic-themed wedding reception was hosted this week for an Indian-Italian couple in Dubai.

Last month, Nirmalya, an Indian resident living in the United Arab Emirates, and Gilberto, a native Italian, were married in traditional fashion at the Guruvayur temple in Kerala state, with attendees wearing garments handwoven by local weavers.

Now their wedding reception in Dubai was influenced by Emirati traditions. So, Nirmalya wore a green jarabia Because her gown was adorned with a tiara, Gilberto was in Candura, Tail and a Gutra.

Not only the newlyweds, but 750 guests also wore similar Arabic attire. Also, there are artists, dancing, music, henna, food – all with a little local flavor – and some camels and falcons.

Nirmalya is the daughter of fashion designer Abhini and Sharjah-based Indian philanthropic businessman and filmmaker Sohan Roy. The unique reception was organized by Roy’s colleagues in the Aries Group.

“A wedding reception like this is a tribute to the country that gave us everything in life. We are delighted that the ceremony coincides with National Day, which makes it extra special,” said Roy, who wore a kandura, gutra and cane.

“It was an unforgettable ceremony with around 750 guests following local traditions so it was unique. It was an awe-inspiring and memorable experience,” said Abhini, whose designs were used for the hand-woven fabrics worn during the wedding clothing. They are made by traditional artisans from Kuthampully, a handloom village in Thrissur district of Kerala state.

“We felt the need to support and spread awareness about the dying handloom industry in India. So everyone was wearing garments handwoven by Shekhar Kuthampully,” notes Roy, who has implemented several unique initiatives in the past such as The Agnipath program provides job offers to retirees, pensions to employees’ parents, strict anti-dowry policy among employees, wages to unemployed employees’ wives, scholarships for employees’ children, etc.

Nirmalya and Gilberto studied Naval Architecture at the University of Southampton, UK.

The newlyweds said: “We thank everyone involved in organizing this special ceremony for giving us a lifetime of precious memories.”
