GUADALAJARA, 4th December, 2022 (WAM) — The UAE Book Board for Youth (UAEBBY) and the Mexico Chapter of the International Book Board for Youth (IBBY), in partnership with the House of Wisdom in Sharjah and Guadalajara’s City Museum in The 36th Guadalajara International Book Fair (GIBF) presents the exhibition “Folktales Reimagined” to promote intercultural dialogue.
Opened by Bodour Al Qasimi, President of the International Publishers Association (IPA) and Founder and Honorary Chairman of UAEBBY, the exhibition is part of the Mexico Book Fair’s Sharjah VIP programme, which concludes today.
First launched earlier this year during the Bologna Children’s Book Fair in Italy, ‘Folktales Reimagined’ has been widely praised for culturally enriching the folklore heritage of the UAE and Italy.
The current iteration aims at a creative exchange of ideas between the UAE and Mexico and showcases the work of five commissioned artists from the UAE who have reimagined and created artworks revolving around Mexican legends and fables.
The exhibition also included five artists from Latin American countries who presented five works of art related to Emirati folktales.
The cross-cultural project invites artists from two very different cultures to reimagine each other’s most popular folktales, born of a creative partnership during the Sharjah World Book Capital (SWBC).
This collaborative exhibition features a new generation of artists retelling the stories of the past through their eyes and experiences. This dialogue between cultures is a fusion of ideas and an authentic expression of the cultural values ​​of the Emirati and Mexican societies.
Folktales of the UAE
“Umm Alheilan”, the story of a transfigured woman who spreads malicious jealousy and greed, is beautifully encapsulated by Juan Gedovius, who has illustrated over 90 books in different languages.
“Al Sa’lawah,” the story of a woman with gorilla-like hair who transforms into a beautiful woman at night to murder men, was written by Guillermo de Gante Illustrator of fiction and non-fiction subjects, in books, magazines, and newspapers.
“Khattaf Ruffay” was brought to life by illustrator and animator Valeria Gallo, while “Shanaq Hanaq Bin Anaq,” the tale of a giant, illustrated by Amanda Mijangos, is another fictional tale of a deadly entity slaying its victims.
“Sweida Khassuf”, which means “date” in Arabic, is illustrated by award-winning artist Armando Fonseca, who also won the 2022 Sharjah Children’s Reading Festival in the UAE.

Mexico’s diverse culture, influenced by European and Central American cultures, takes on new looks and colors in the vivid imaginations of Emirati illustrators.
Abdulla Al Sharhan, a self-taught Emirati artist who was introduced to children’s books by UAEBBY and has written and illustrated over 12 books, vividly captures the compelling story of ‘The Hummingbird Legend’ with its message of love and affection .
The story of the origin of two volcanoes “Popocatépetl” (“Smoking Mountain”) and Iztacchuatl (“Sleeping Woman”) is reimagined under the expert eyes and hands of Aysha Saif Al Hemrani, who turns culture into art To inspire others.
Self-taught artist and illustrator Mohammed Al Jneibi has captured this colorful image of “The Bat,” the most beautiful bird of origin as a nocturnal mammal.
Eissa Alnuaimi, aka ISSABLACK, self-taught freelance illustrator, presents the essence of “The Tale of Corn: The Ant That Feeds Mankind”, while Sharjah-born Nasir Nasrallah brings to life “The Possum and the Mice” s story. fire”.
