Etihad Airways has been named Environmental Sustainability Innovation of the Year at CAPA’s Annual Environmental Sustainability Excellence Awards in Singapore, and has been named Best Sustainable Airline 2022 by Business Traveler magazine.
Etihad Airways’ sustainability program begins with a focus on improving operational efficiency. The airline quickly went on to unite industry leaders to establish a comprehensive, cross-organizational aviation sustainability plan to support decarbonization, biodiversity conservation and waste management.
Etihad Airways’ flagship sustainability initiatives include the Greenliner program, which uses the airline’s fleet of Boeing 787 Dreamliners as a flying test bed, and the Sustainable50 A350-1000 launched earlier this year for Airbus and Rolls-Royce . Meanwhile, Etihad Airways is working with a range of organizations to reduce its CO2 emissions, most recently with World Energy and SATAVIA to help implement an offsetting ‘book and claim’ system.
Mariam Al Qubaisi, Head of Sustainability and Excellence at Etihad Airways, said: “2022 is a big year for us with many milestones we are proud of. Awards from Aviation and Business Traveler USA rounded out the year, and we were also named Green Airline of the Year by Airline Ratings for 2022. Going into 2023, we remain committed to working with partners to support the industry in achieving Achieving the mission of net zero emissions.”
Marco Navarria, Content and Marketing Director, said: “The CAPA Aviation Sustainability Excellence Awards use a range of independent data and analytics to recognize airlines and partners in the travel chain that demonstrate clear leadership, innovation and commitment to sustainability initiatives .These honorees are helping to generate the positive momentum needed to drive the industry toward its environmental goals.”
The CAPA/Envest Airline Sustainability Rating System rates and ranks each airline’s sustainability performance relative to other airlines.
The airline also won Best Sustainable Airline for 2022 from Business Traveler USA. The prestigious publication created the new category to recognize the aviation industry’s impressive efforts to reduce emissions.
In 2021, Etihad Airways launched its first consumer-focused ‘green’ loyalty and rewards program to incentivize passengers to make greener choices.
The carrier’s “Conscious Choices” program offers loyalty points to passengers who choose to offset travel emissions and reduce onboard baggage. A corporate-focused program ‘Corporate Aware Choice’ has been added to promote corporate partners’ sustainability goals, offering purchase options for SAF, carbon offsets and ‘green’ surcharges.
In the air, Etihad Airways operates one of the most modern and efficient fleets in the world. The airline’s average fleet age is just 5.8 years, and nearly 60% of its aircraft consist of new-generation widebodies.
In addition to the airline’s comprehensive testing and innovation programme, Etihad Airways has also become the first airline to receive commercial financing based on proven compliance with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
More recently, the Etihad Mangrove Project was launched to create carbon-sucking forests in countries where the airline operates, starting with a forest in Abu Dhabi, the airline’s headquarters. – trade arab news agency
