MoIAT and Edge launch ‘Pioneers 4.0’ hackathon series

As part of a series of initiatives to accelerate digital transformation, the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT) and Edge Group have completed the first ‘Pioneering 4.0’ hackathon series.

This follows the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two parties in August 2022 to expand Edge’s Learning and Innovation Factory offerings to the UAE’s industrial ecosystem and collaborate to establish an Industry 4.0 Support Center.

The “Pioneers 4.0” hackathon series will host two challenges per year. Each challenge has a unique problem statement, addresses industrial pain points to encourage digital transformation and operational excellence in various factory settings, and enables participants to better anticipate and prepare for the needs of the industry and future requirements.

The inaugural challenge of “Pioneers 4.0” will be held at the Edge Learning & Innovation Factory in Abu Dhabi on November 21-22, 2022, with Microsoft as a technology partner.

It benefited 15 students from some of the leading universities in the UAE, including American University of Sharjah, Higher Institute of Technology, Khalifa University, Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), New York University Abu Dhabi, Zayed University and University of Manchester, Dubai, to work in teams and come up with innovative solutions to selected problem statements.

The challenge requires participants to leverage data from sensors and manufacturing execution systems to develop solutions using artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to enhance predictive maintenance. It aims to enhance maintenance in three aspects: first, predict machine downtime and unplanned downtime; second, predict energy consumption and abnormal conditions of sensors in the manufacturing process; third, analyze manufacturing data of the production line during the production cycle, and Available data to assess the quality of the manufacturing process.

On the second day, November 22, participating students presented their solutions to a judging panel of subject matter experts from MoIAT, Edge, and Microsoft in hopes of becoming challenge winners.

Zhaksylyk Kazykenov, Aidana Nurakhmetova and Samar Fares from MBZUAI and Shaikha Al Athmani from the University of Manchester won the inaugural Hackathon Challenge for their unique business case and ‘outside the box’ thinking.

The Pioneering 4.0 Hackathon is aligned with the UAE’s Industry 4.0 initiative (I4.0), which aims to promote the adoption of advanced technologies in the industrial sector through various enablers and incentives. The Champions 4.0 Network, a group of leading national and international companies including companies such as Edge and Microsoft, is a key pillar of I4.0. Under the network, companies explore collaboration and exchange to accelerate digital transformation and adoption of 4IR solutions.

The “Pioneers 4.0” hackathon series aims to bridge the gap between university research and the industrial ecosystem, creating an opportunity for bachelor, master and doctoral students to put theoretical knowledge into practice, and contribute to solving some of the pressing challenges facing industry today. contribute.
