Emirates Dubai 7s to welcome 5,500 global athletes

Some 5,500 athletes from 32 countries will soon arrive to compete in 28 UAE Dubai Sevens Invitational tournaments during the UAE National Day long weekend starting 1 December.

More than 420 sports teams will compete in intense competition including rugby sevens, cricket, netball and the latest addition to the annual festival, WODON3, a fitness competition for elite and amateur athletes looking to push their limits.

The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series usually kicks off the season with the Dubai Sevens in the UAE, featuring some of the world’s best professional rugby players, both male and female, from 28 countries, including Australia, Fiji and Dubai’s top Olympic champions. Fan favorites South Africa, Ireland and Great Britain will all compete on the pitch.

At Emirates Dubai 7s, rugby is not limited to professional players. The truly inclusive event will also feature the Men’s and Women’s International Invitational and Open, as well as Men’s Over-35 and Under-19 Social, Vet competitions, while the best teams from the Bay Area will compete for the Gulf Men’s League, Open, Social Tournament, Veteran’s Tournament, Women’s Tournament, U19 Men’s and Women’s Tournament, as well as the UAE National Development Cup for UAE players. The 16 play-offs will be played at the Sevens Stadium over three days.

On the cricket front, Emirates Dubai 7s will host teams in the Open Competitive & Open Social, a women’s, men’s and juniors tournament, as well as the Emirates Airline Cup Invitational.

Netball is one of the most played sports by women, with 20 million players in more than 80 countries and a growing fan and participant base. The sport is growing in popularity in the UAE, with more than 1,000 people playing here every week, both in schools and in amateur leagues. Emirates Dubai 7s has been supporting the development of the sport and this year will be launching the Ladies Open, Ladies Social Open, Youth, Mixed, Gulf Ladies and Gulf Youth Aspire Invitationals.

Emirates Dubai 7s will also host WODON3 for the first time, a functional fitness competition for all sport levels. WODON3 was born from the growing synergy between fitness and existing sports, rugby sevens, netball and cricket, and will bring more excitement to the game. WODON3 will be a platform for athletes to demonstrate teamwork, test physical fitness, and experience the festive atmosphere from morning to night.

Off-site, Emirates Dubai 7s offers a range of musical attractions such as Rugby Rocks, The House, Beats on Two and Frequency on 8. The stage will include live performances from the Cuban Brothers, world famous DJ duo Gorgon City and superstar Craig David will showcase the TS5 to round out this year’s festivities. – trade arab news agency
