Abu Dhabi Airports (ADA) is working on an iteration of its historic master plan, according to a senior executive.
In an exclusive interview with Zawya Projects, Chief Operating Officer Frank McCrorie said the ADA also intends to sign off on a sustainability strategy ahead of COP 28, which is scheduled to take place in the UAE from 6-17 November 2023.
He said: “We are working on a second iteration of the historic master plan to understand aspects such as terminal expansion and cargo growth. accommodate future growth.”
“For example, one area we are currently focusing on is the widening of the runway and the new terminal at Sir Bani Yas Airport.”
McCrorie noted that the assessment goes beyond infrastructure investment.
“We are using external agencies to validate our 20-year roadmap and provide guidance for the master plan in terms of facilities.”
Strong growth from recent entrants such as Wizz Air and Abu Dhabi Air Arabia complements Etihad Airways’ intercontinental traffic at its Abu Dhabi hub, which focuses on point-to-point traffic, the ADA executive said.
Last month, Zawya had reported that the ADA would see flights from Turkmenistan.
McCrorie continued, “It’s more about how we drive more traffic, so [master plan] Iterations will also assess potential capacity and when these limits may be exceeded, such as long-term passenger numbers”
“We are looking at how to provide additional capacity, particularly through check-in and how to manage its peak through slots; besides rolling out a new biometric system.”
“Additionally, the ADA is also looking at navigation services and how the overall landscape will change, and exploring options for a centralized system for all five of our airports.”
Each of these outcomes would significantly alter the historic master plan, McCrorie said, without elaborating on a timeline.
He revealed that ADA is also looking at overseas opportunities beyond the five UAE airports it owns and operates.
“We are looking at opportunities overseas to expand our technical and operational expertise,” he said, without giving further details.
In addition, ADA is also committed to agreeing on a sustainable development strategy before COP 28.
“The strategy will look at investment, procurement and business practices. It will also look at how businesses engage with local communities”
“For example, we are working on noise monitoring systems at Al Bateen and Abu Dhabi International Airport. We are also working on a metering strategy to monitor consumption to recover costs and make long-term changes,” concludes McCrorie.
