Leah Remini has said Kirstie Alley’s death was “very sad” after years of feuding over Scientology.
The 52-year-old actress told Rolling Stone she died on Dec. 5 at the age of 71 after “Cheers” star Kirstie, 71, after a short battle with cancer.
Leah, a former member of Scientology, said: “The news of Kirsty Alley’s passing is very sad.
“While Scientologists don’t believe in prayer, I do pray for her two children who are now without a mom.”
Leah added that she hopes Kirstie’s children William ‘True’, 30, and her daughter Lillie, 28, will be able to “free themselves from this dangerous and toxic organization one day”.
The actress, who has been a critic of Scientology since quitting Scientology in 2013 after growing up with the organization, also questioned whether Kirstie’s love of Scientology influenced her cancer treatment.
She said: “While reports that Kirstie sought traditional cancer treatment gave her a fighting chance, most Scientologists do not seek treatment until it is too late.
“Scientologists believe they can cure diseases like cancer.
“It’s one of the most sinister things they promise. Because Scientology claims to be an exact science and not a belief, its members are brainwashed into believing these false claims are warranted.”
After joining the Church of Scientology in the 1970s, Kirstie believed that Scientology helped her overcome her cocaine addiction and remained a believer for the rest of her life.
“Kirstie Alley was a much-loved member of our church, an advocate for drug recovery and a passionate advocate for human rights,” the group said after her death.
In November 2015, Leah told Howard Stern that if they met, Kirsty “wouldn’t be able to talk to her” because she was “avoided”.
