Neil Young is trying to “clean up” a pile of unfinished records.
The Heart of Gold hitmaker released World Records, his 42nd album, less than a year after its predecessor, The Barn, followed by four historic live albums and culminating in His 2000 collaboration with Crazy Horse, “Toast,” and the extended version of “Harvest,” also released to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the landmark record, admits he’s experimenting with new music while also Complete unfinished old works.
He said: “I have a lot of stuff to clear.
“I left a big mess behind.
“I have a lot of unfinished records, unfinished this and that. I have time to process it now, to focus on it.
“But at the same time, anything new sets precedent. Always.
“As soon as I start thinking about something new, I immediately drop the old thing and do the new thing.”
While Neil knew Toast was a “great” album when he was writing it, it didn’t seem “important” to release it at the time.
He told Uncut magazine: “I knew ‘toast’ was great.
“I knew it was going to come out one day. I mean – we got it done, you know.
“We cared so much about it to get it done.
“So that says something.
“But it didn’t seem to matter that it showed up at that point, or that it would.”
Collaborator Rick Rubin produced “World Records” and was present at some “Toast” recording sessions – agreeing that Neil doesn’t work on a regular basis.
“Time doesn’t move at the traditional pace with Neil’s involvement,” he said. “Some things seem to come along impossibly fast. Other times, they go years in obscurity until the propensity to release something catches Neil.”
