Israeli with PTSD arrested in Abu Dhabi for clashes with local police

[ad_1]

An Israeli man has been arrested in Abu Dhabi after clashes with local police and will be detained for at least another week.

Nachman Gabai, 21, was arrested Monday during an eight-hour layover at Abu Dhabi airport en route from Tel Aviv to India.

He was suspected of disturbing the peace and offending a public servant, Maariv reported on Wednesday.

As Gaby, who has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, left the terminal and stood with another Israeli, a police patrol car drove by and asked the two to identify themselves, according to reports.

Gaby was clearly enraged by the situation and made abusive remarks that aroused the suspicion of the police and led them to ask him to come to the airport station for a search. There he was strip searched and his belongings checked. Although nothing was found in the search, Gabai became more agitated by the situation and eventually, the police arrested him.

The court on Wednesday extended his remand by seven days, Maariv reported. His family is trying to find a local lawyer to represent him at next week’s hearing.

“He reacts poorly to stressful situations because of post-traumatic stress, and his reactions can be very unpleasant, but that’s his only sin,” Gabai’s mother, Ronit, told Maariv. “The guy next to him said he was really panicking but they thought it was like he had something to hide because he was afraid of what they would do to him. It’s a misunderstanding that’s getting complicated and I hope it clears up as soon as possible solve.”

The foreign ministry said it was aware of the case and was handling the matter through its Ministry for Israelis Abroad and the consulate in Abu Dhabi.

Israel normalized relations with the UAE in 2020 under the US-sponsored Abraham Accords. Since then, it has become a popular tourist destination for Israelis, as well as a gateway to the East.

Israeli politics outspoken

I joined The Times of Israel after years of covering U.S. and Israeli politics for Hebrew-language news outlets.

In my opinion, responsible reporting on Israeli politicians means taking a 360-degree look at what they say and do – conveying not just what happened, but what that means in the wider context of Israeli society and the region .

It’s hard to do because you can rarely take a politician at face value – you have to work extra hard to present the full context and work to overcome your own biases.

I’m proud of our work that tells the story of Israeli politics direct and comprehensive. I believe that Israel is stronger and more democratic when professional journalists do this difficult job well.

Your joining supports our work israeli community times Helps ensure that we can continue to do so.

thanks,
