sometimes it feels like your Life is the center of the universe, but when you look up at the night sky, our world is much bigger than ours.Maybe that’s why people have fantasies about all the amazing things our galaxy can do – a glowing blood moonA sort of meteor shower, or a lunar or solar eclipse. There’s something sacred — even magical — about the intersection of astronomy and astrology, which is why people want to know months in advance when is the next solar eclipse 2023.
Read on to learn what experts think about solar eclipses in general, as well as information about the three upcoming eclipses in 2023.
What is an eclipse?
according to nasa The website says that a solar eclipse “occurs when a celestial body, such as the moon or a planet, enters the shadow of another celestial body.” The two main types of eclipses are solar and lunar.
astrophysicist and folklorist Dr. Moiya McTier is the co-host of the Multititude Podcast light blue pods and the host Exolore and the author of this book The Milky Way: The Autobiography of Our Galaxy.
Dr McTeer told procession“Most commonly, a solar eclipse occurs when one object passes in front of another, blocking the view. A solar eclipse occurs when the Earth, sun, and moon are in a special configuration with one another.”

What is a solar eclipse, explained for kids?
Some adults are still struggling to figure out what a solar eclipse is actually Yep, so don’t worry if you’re not sure how to explain a solar eclipse to kids. For both parents and even teacherexplaining solar eclipses to children can be difficult.
You know, all these “celestial bodies” and “special configurations”…
Fortunately, European Space Agency (ESA), a meaningful resource for parents and educators when explaining solar eclipses to children, writes:
“A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun. When this occurs, the Moon gradually blocks the light from the Sun. If the Sun and Moon line up perfectly in the sky, we call it Total solar eclipse. The sky was getting darker during the day and it felt like it was night – even the stars were visible!”
In simple terms, explain to children that a solar eclipse is when the moon blocks the light from the sun as it moves between the earth and the sun.
The ESA goes on to explain lunar eclipses to children:
Up to three times a year, the bright face of the full moon will slowly turn a deep orange. This is called a lunar eclipse. This happens when the Moon happens to be on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. The Moon then passes through Earth’s shadow. But some sunlight is able to pass through the Earth’s atmosphere to reach the moon, giving it an orange color.
If you need help explaining this to kids in layman’s terms! Tell the children that a lunar eclipse occurs when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun, which causes the moon to appear orange.

Difference Between Solar and Lunar Eclipses
There are two types – solar and lunar eclipses – and each depends on where the sun, moon and earth are relative to each other.
Eddie Mahoneya NASA astronomer who runs an astrophotography studio at the Hyatt Regency Resort and Spa in Maui, Hawaii, told procession“A solar eclipse is when the moon passes in front of the sun, while a lunar eclipse is when the earth blocks sunlight from reaching the moon.

Dr McTier explained, “A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun. It casts a tiny shadow on the Earth’s surface, called umbra eclipse. “
As mentioned above, lunar eclipses often also cause the Moon to appear a distinct orange color.
“A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth is directly between the sun and the moon, so Earth casts a huge shadow on our only natural satellite,” Dr McTeer added. “Another difference is that a total lunar eclipse always occurs during a full moon, while a total solar eclipse always occurs during a new moon.”

There is another major difference between solar and lunar eclipses, and that is how often they occur.
“Solar eclipses don’t happen on a perfectly regular schedule, but they do occur during irregular periods,” Dr McTeer explained. “Total solar eclipses occur about every 18 months, and total lunar eclipses typically occur every 2.5 years, but we seem to be in a period of very frequent solar eclipses right now.”
According to NASA, there are also subcategories of lunar eclipses: total lunar eclipses and partial lunar eclipses.
“A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon and the Sun are directly opposite the Earth,” NASA’s website explains. “Although the Moon is in Earth’s shadow, some sunlight reaches the Moon. Sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, filtering out most Sunlight blu ray. This makes the Moon appear red to Earthlings. Earth’s shadow passes in front of the Moon until it turns red or orange. “

Alternatively, a partial lunar eclipse is when only part of the moon is in Earth’s shadow. During this eclipse, the Earth’s shadow is very dark on the side of the Moon that actually faces Earth.
In both cases, however, lunar eclipses usually last longer than solar eclipses.
“A lunar eclipse typically lasts for several hours. Partial lunar eclipses occur at least twice a year, but total lunar eclipses are rare,” NASA wrote.
When is the next solar eclipse?
this recent solar eclipse happened at October 25th, 2022. It is not visible in the United States, but people in Europe, parts of Asia, Africa, the Urals, and Siberia are able to witness it.
However, in North America, the last visible lunar eclipse was a total lunar eclipse November 8, 2022. Also known as blood moonMoon enters penumbra at 3:01 a.m. ET morning and departed at 8:58 AM ET.

At the time of writing, TimeandDate.org website There will be a total of four solar eclipses in 2023 – visible from all over the world.
“The next total solar eclipse will occur at April 20, 2023, but the path of totality will mainly pass through the Indian Ocean and parts of Australia,” explained Dr McTier.

according to nasathe path of totality is the trajectory of the Moon’s shadow across the Earth’s surface.
“This eclipse will be one of the rarest types: a hybrid eclipse, which transitions from a total to an annular eclipse due to the moon’s curved orbit around Earth,” Dr McTeer continued. “As the moon curves around Earth, it moves slightly closer to the sun at certain times, so it appears to block less of the sun’s light from our perspective.”
What to Know About the October 2023 Solar Eclipse
There will be another solar eclipse in 2023 (the lunar eclipse in May will not be visible to North America), followed by two more in October in North America.
“This will be an annular solar eclipse because the moon is slightly further away from Earth and only a small portion of the outer edge of the sun is visible,” Dr McTeer explained. “It occurs on October 14, 2023, and the path of maximum coverage will pass through the western United States and South America.”
Then there will be an annular lunar eclipse from October 28-29.

When is the solar eclipse in 2023?
At the time of writing, there will be four solar eclipses in 2023, with the next in April 2023:
- April 20, 2023: Total Solar Eclipse
“A total solar eclipse will be visible from Western Australia on April 20, 2023,” Mahoney explained. “This is when the sun is completely blocked by the moon and day turns into night.”
However, this is not visible from North America.
- May 5-6, 2023: Penumbral Lunar Eclipse
Another solar eclipse not visible from North America, but visible from Europe, Asia, Australia, Africa, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean and Antarctica.
- October 14, 2023: Annular solar eclipse
Mahoney added: “On October 14, 2023, there will be an annular solar eclipse from Oregon to Texas to South America. At this time, the moon will not completely cover the sun, and a ring of sunlight will still be visible.”
- October 28, 2023: Partial lunar eclipse
“On October 28-29, 2023, a partial lunar eclipse will occur in northeastern Canada, Europe and Africa,” Mahoney said. “This is when the Earth blocks some sunlight from reaching the Moon and it gets dimmer for a few hours.”

Best places to travel to watch the October 14, 2023 solar eclipse
Are you one of the many people who have already started planning to travel to see a solar eclipse in October 2023?First, Dr. McTier recommends using the site great american eclipse Plan your eclipse trip, but first, you need to know where to go.
