UAE private sector urged to align with COP28 goals

It is vital that the private sector joins governments in their efforts to tackle climate change and has aggressive plans for all anticipated challenges.

The call comes after the Dubai Chamber of Commerce invited the Dubai business community to an event to discuss how the private sector can participate in and benefit from COP28.

Businesses of all sizes and across all sectors must revisit their business models and restructure them to support sustainable growth. The UAE recognizes the enormous potential of climate action to drive socioeconomic growth, create jobs, empower women and youth, and strengthen the overall economy in a sustainable manner for the future.

Commenting on opportunities for the private sector, Majid Al Suwaidi, Director General of the UAE Presidency of COP28, said: “As one of the most dynamic business centers in the world, Dubai is home to some of the most innovative and exciting companies on the planet. It will be a great asset to the UAE when we host the UN COP28 climate conference in Dubai next November and we will count on our business community to play a leading role in making COP28 UAE a milestone moment in global progress on climate change .”

During the panel discussion, speakers from leading UAE companies elaborated on the initiatives being taken to advance their companies’ respective sustainability agendas. It also discusses other plans around climate action and how the business community can support COP28.

Maha Al Gargawi, Executive Director of Business Advocacy, Dubai Chamber, added: “As host of COP28, the UAE has the opportunity to strengthen its position and reputation as a leader in climate action, with the environment at the center of the country’s ambitious economic development in the coming years. agenda. To do this, governments and the private sector need to work together, and partnerships between the two are more important than ever.”

Speakers on the panel included Sabrin Rahma, Director, Domestic Affairs, COP28, UAE; Yasmine Berbir, Head of Sustainability, FZE, Nestlé Middle East; Florence Bulte, Chief Sustainability Officer, Chalhoub Group; and Raji Hattar, Chief Sustainability Officer, Aramex. The session was chaired by Dr. Kamel Mellahi, Senior Manager, Center for Responsible Enterprise, Dubai Chamber.

The UAE has made great strides towards sustainability, carbon neutrality and environmental protection through a series of ambitious initiatives and projects aimed at shaping an economy based on renewable and clean energy, advanced technology and eco-friendly businesses.

The latest of these is the UAE 2050 Net Zero Emissions Strategic Initiative, which aims to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, making the UAE the first MENA country to do so. — trade arab news agency
