Since then, several smaller militant splinter groups, including the deadly Jamaatul Ahrar, have rejoined TTP, an umbrella group formed in 2007.

The groups have survived several operations by security forces over the years and have grown stronger since the Afghan Taliban took power in their country.

Pakistan started a reconciliation process with the TTP last year through the good offices of the Afghan Taliban, but nothing came of it.

The groups called off a ceasefire in November and have carried out numerous attacks on security forces, including a recent suicide bombing in Islamabad that killed a policeman.
