Gifts, visits and talks: How volunteers support Abu Dhabi’s elderly residents

The presence of Ma’an County Director General Salama Alameemi at the event marked the success of an initiative to increase interactions between seniors, residents and volunteers since the COVID-19 pandemic began. By serving the community, volunteers play an active role that can inspire future program participants.

This year, a team of 10 volunteer leaders led the initiative, enlisting 46 volunteers to donate their time and help improve the well-being of 45 seniors. They also help organize walks, tours, boat rides and National Day celebrations at various venues including Yas Mall, Al Huderiyat Island, Jubail Mangrove Park, National Aquarium and Al Forsan International Resort in Yas Bay orgasm.

Dr Mohamed Al Dhaheri, Acting Executive Director of Ma’an Community Engagement and Volunteering, said the JOG represents the authorities’ efforts to foster real change by supporting older people.

“As part of our efforts to build a rich and vibrant network of non-profit organisations, foundations and social enterprises, we have launched volunteer groups to help serve and support Abu Dhabi’s seniors and residents. We hope to encourage More volunteers work with us to help build cohesive communities, inspire individuals to take an active role in their communities, and encourage individuals to take responsibility,” added Al Dhaheri.

Salem Al Breiki, Volunteer Leader for the newest JOG cohort, said: “This cohort has been an enriching experience for me and all our volunteers as it has given us the opportunity to help include and support older people and Residents. Group events. This type of work helps us bring the community together and provides great opportunities for people to benefit from the wisdom and life experience of older people. As the number of participants increased, the event witnessed the elderly Great interaction with volunteers.”

JOG volunteers ensure that each meeting is followed by interactive and informative presentations by professional volunteers on a variety of topics related to the health and wellness of the attending seniors. Volunteers also received corporate social responsibility contributions to enhance the experience for seniors, including Helping Hands Hospitality with refreshments at every walk, Vox Cinema Lobby with snacks for laughter yoga sessions, and a Golden Boat Ride to celebrate National Day Bracelet Gifts for Senior Ladies and Alkhet Alabied Men Cut ghutra for Senior Men.

“Inclusion is vital to our community and it is our duty to bring all social groups together to support each other. Every generation should have the opportunity to interact and share their experiences and knowledge. All our volunteers are honored to help run and ensure These events for senior citizens and residents were a success. I really hope that more volunteers will join our program in the future,” added Abeer Saleh Ali, another volunteer leader of the 6th JOG cohort.

Launched in 2019, the JOG reflects the UAE leadership’s directives on caring for the elderly and residents, and the importance of building bridges of communication between them and the rest of society. Working with other government entities, the private sector, the ‘third sector’ and volunteer groups, Maan works to integrate and support all Abu Dhabi communities.
