Volunteers, both local and expatriate, have spread the word about the importance of inclusion and well-being of older people through their active participation in Abu Dhabi’s ‘Generations’ programme.

Hosted by the Ma’an Social Contribution Authority, the initiative is in line with the directives of the UAE leadership on caring for the elderly and residents.

Encouraging the concept of volunteering for seniors, Generation Tour’s latest and sixth cohort is made up entirely of volunteers, rather than the NGOs or government entities that administer the programme. A total of 46 volunteers gave their time to improve the wellbeing of 45 older people. There were walks, tours, boat rides and National Day celebrations at Yas Mall, Hudairiyat Island, Jubail Mangrove Park, National Aquarium, Al Forsan International Resort and Yas Bay. A team of 10 volunteer leaders lead the program’s operations.

Salem Al Breiki, volunteer leader from the sixth cohort, said it was an enriching experience for all volunteers and brought people of all ages together through the event at the Abu Dhabi landmark.

“It gives us the opportunity to help include and support seniors and residents through a range of group activities. This type of work helps us bring communities together and provides people with an incredible opportunity to benefit from the wisdom and lived experience of seniors. This is a great opportunity. With the increase in the number of participants, the event witnessed a lively interaction between the elderly and volunteers.”

In addition, professional volunteers delivered interactive and informative presentations on a variety of topics related to seniors’ health and wellness.

Another volunteer leader, Abeer Saleh Ali, stressed the importance of older people being included in society.

“It is our duty to bring all social groups together and support each other. Every generation should have the opportunity to interact and share their experiences and knowledge. All our volunteers are honored to help run and ensure these events for seniors and residents A success. I really hope that more volunteers will join our program in the future.”

Ma’an Director General Salama Alameemi took part in the last walking and boat tour in Yas Bay, marking the success of an innovative initiative that has strengthened during the pandemic and beyond Interaction between seniors and residents with Abu Dhabi volunteers.

Dr Mohamed Al Dhaheri, Acting Executive Director of the Community Engagement and Volunteering Sector, added that the scheme represents Ma’an’s efforts to “catalyze real change” by encouraging volunteers to give their time for the benefit of seniors and residents.

“We hope to encourage more volunteers to work with us to help build cohesive communities, inspire individuals to take an active role in their communities, and encourage individuals to take responsibility.”
