‘Avatar’ sequel dominates box office again

NEW YORK (AP) — “Avatar: The Way of Water” reigned supreme at the box office for the third week in a row, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

James Cameron’s long-awaited first “Avatar” sequel brought in about $63 million over the holiday weekend, roughly in line with the week before, and now has more than $400 million domestically US dollars, the global box office gross exceeds 1.3 billion US dollars. “Ways of Water” is already the 15th highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, behind only the first “Black Panther.”

Comscore data released on Sunday showed “Avatar” was far ahead of runner-up Universal Pictures’ “Shrek” spinoff “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” with an estimated $16 million, while Disney’s “Shrek: The Last Wish.” Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was second at the box office. Bring in approximately $4.8 million in revenue.

Sony biopic “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Someone” made $4.2 million in its second week of release. Despite five Golden Globe nominations, “Babylon,” an early Hollywood epic starring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, still underperformed. Paramount’s second-week take was just $2.7 million, down 24%, and it averaged just $815 per location. By comparison, 20th Century Studios’ new film, “Avatar,” grossed an average of more than $15,000.

U.S. and Canadian theater ticket sales are expected Friday through Sunday, according to Comscore. Final domestic data will be released on Monday.
