Tehran [Iran]Jan. 1 (ANI): A member of Iran’s security forces was shot dead during protests in the city of Semiron on Sunday, about 100 days after Mahsa Amini’s death sparked nationwide unrest, state media IRNA reported.
“A Basij member was killed by militants in Semiron city,” IRNA reported, referring to paramilitary forces linked to the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Protesters gathered in the city about 470 kilometers south of the capital Tehran in the central province of Isfahan on Saturday night, IRNA said.
They rallied in front of the District Administration Building and at other locations in Semirom, it added.

“Security forces were deployed in the city to establish order and, in some cases, clashed with several rioters,” the report said.
Iran has been rocked by protests – what authorities have dubbed “riots” – since Amini, 22, died in custody on Sept. 16 for allegedly violating the country’s strict dress code for women.
She was allegedly arrested at the entrance to the Shahid Haghani highway in Tehran and dragged away by guided patrols known locally as Gasht-e Ershad, allegedly for wearing a loose turban.
The death sparked a rare outrage and civilian protests on the streets of Tehran, with citizens of all ages and genders gathering on street corners to chant death to the “morality police” who blamed them for killing the 22-year-old detainee .
While authorities claim Amini died of heart failure, her family claims a cover-up, saying she was murdered.
Iranian officials say hundreds of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed and thousands arrested in unrest across the country.
Meanwhile, Tehran accused hostile foreign powers and opposition groups of fomenting unrest, according to the IRNA.
Last month, Iran executed two 23-year-old men convicted of attacking security forces in connection with the protests.
Nine others have been sentenced to death, the judiciary said. Dozens of protesters this week also face charges that could carry the death penalty, activists said. (Arnie)
