World News | Rockets hit US base in eastern Syria without causing damage

[ad_1]

BEIRUT, Jan. 4 (AP) — Two rockets hit a base housing U.S. troops in eastern Syria on Wednesday without causing any loss of life or material, the U.S. military said.

The early morning attack on the ConocoPhillips mission support base came as Iran and its allies in the region came as a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad killed General Qasem Soleimani, commander of Iran’s elite Quds Force Third Anniversary.

No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks in eastern Syria, where it is not uncommon for bases housing U.S. troops to be hit with rockets or mortars. Sleeper cells of Iran-backed militias and the Islamic State group, which was defeated in Syria in March 2019, are located nearby.

The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the opposition war monitor, said the rockets were fired by members of Arab tribesmen armed by Iran in the region.

“Such attacks put coalition forces and civilians at risk and undermine hard-won stability and security in Syria and the region,” U.S. Central Command spokesman Jobuccino said in a statement.

Members of the Kurdish-led, U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces visited the rocket launch site and found a third free of fire, Central Command said.

About 900 U.S. troops are stationed in Syria, both in the north and further south and east. (Associated Press)
