As much as 40% of the Chinese population has been infected with Covid-19 in the past month due to the rising number of cases in the country, Asia Times reported, citing medical experts.

On Wednesday, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus again asked China to share reliable data on COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths in the country.

Analysis by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention showed that the Omicron lineages BA.5.2 and BF.7 predominated among locally acquired infections, the WHO said in a statement. “Based on genome sequencing, BA.5.2 and BF.7 together accounted for 97.5% of all local infections,” the statement added.
