[ad_1]

NEW MEXICO (United States), Jan. 6 (AP) – A Border Patrol agent wearing body armor was shot Thursday during a standoff with a vehicle suspected of smuggling migrants in New Mexico, federal authorities said , but was not seriously injured.

Six people were taken into custody after the vehicle later crashed, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said. The agent was shot multiple times in the chest and was released after a medical examination, the agency added.

Two of the detainees were taken to a trauma center in El Paso, Texas, for treatment, it said. Their circumstances and identities were not immediately released.

New Mexico State Police are assisting with the investigation, and the FBI is also involved, according to state police Lt. Mark Soriano.

Immigration and border enforcement has come under heightened scrutiny in recent weeks. On Thursday, Joe Biden revealed he will make his first visit to the U.S.-Mexico border in El Paso. He said details of the visit were being worked out for his meeting with Mexican and Canadian leaders in Mexico City next week.

Biden also announced on Thursday that the U.S. would immediately begin rejecting Cubans, Haitians and Nicaraguans who illegally cross the border from Mexico, expanding existing efforts to stop Venezuelans trying to enter the United States. (Associated Press)
