The mother of Ashli Babbitt, who was shot dead by police inside the U.S. Capitol during riots on Jan. 6, has been arrested in Washington, D.C.

Police said she was arrested after she refused to leave the street during a demonstration on the second anniversary of the rebellion.

Micki Witthoeft, 58, was charged with a traffic violation, Capitol Police said in an emailed statement. She was released Friday afternoon with a summons to appear in court at a later date, police said.

Video shared on social media showed police repeatedly warning the group to move to the sidewalk or face arrest. Ms Witthoeft was then turned around with her hands behind her back and taken into custody.

According to police, the group did not have permission to demonstrate on the Capitol grounds.

Ms Babbitt, 35, was shot as she tried to climb through the broken window of the barricade door leading to the Speaker’s Hall inside the Capitol.

Police there were evacuating members of Congress from a mob supporting then-President Donald Trump who lied about the 2020 presidential election being stolen.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia cleared the Capitol Police officer who shot her, arguing that he acted in self-defense and defense of the member of Congress.

The Capitol Police also cleared the officer of the charges.
