Sweden’s Henrik Stenson is scheduled to tee off next week at the HSBC Championship in Abu Dhabi for his first European Tour event with LIV Golf.
Stenson won the 2016 British Open at Royal Troon but was stripped of his Ryder Cup captaincy by the European Tour when he opted to join LIV Golf.
The biennial Europe-versus-US event will take place in Italy this year, but it will be woefully lacking in the glamor of several star players who fly the LIV Golf banner, knocked out by the US PGA Tour and the European Tour, the former of which has Purchased shares in it.
Stenson has not played on the European Tour, also known for commercial purposes as the DP World Tour, since last July’s British Open at St Andrews Golf Club in Scotland.
The 46-year-old from Gothenburg won US$4 million (RM17.5 million) at the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational in Bedminster, New Jersey, US, at the end of that month. He beat Dustin Johnson and Matthew Wolff by two strokes.
The next day, the European Tour named Luke Donald to replace Stenson as Ryder Cup captain.
As fate would have it, both Stenson and Donald are on the field list for the tournament in Abu Dhabi, which runs from January 19-22.
Also on the list are LIV golfers Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and 2018 Masters champion Patrick Reed.
The PGA Tour has suspended players from the LIV Golf Tour.
The European Tour attempted similar action but was put on hold to appeal.
The appeal itself will be heard next month by UK-based dispute resolution service Sport Resolutions.
It is understood that the sporting resolution will determine whether the European Tour has the power to sanction players playing LIV events, or whether they can continue to play there and maintain European Tour and Ryder Cup eligibility.
