A Russian missile struck a rural market in eastern Ukraine on Monday, killing two women and wounding four others, including a 10-year-old girl, the district attorney said.
Video taken by public broadcaster Suspilne on the Telegram messaging app showed rescuers sifting through piles of rubble, burning debris and a large crater in Shevchenkove, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) southeast of the city of Kharkiv.
A photo posted online by the Ukrainian president’s office showed rescuers trying to pull out a woman in a thick winter coat. Her head and arms poked out from under the rubble, but it was unclear if she was alive.

“Russian forces committed another act of terror against civilians — a child was wounded and two women were killed,” the district attorney’s office said. “An enemy missile hit the territory of the local market.”
It said in a written statement that it had opened an investigation into potential war crimes, citing preliminary information that the attack came from an S-300 air defense system in Russia’s Belgorod region bordering Ukraine.
Reuters could not immediately verify the reports. There was no immediate comment on the Shevchenkov reports from Russia, which invaded Ukraine more than 10 months ago and Ukraine recaptured Shevchenkov in September after months of Russian occupation.
Andriy Yermak, the head of Ukraine’s presidential administration, criticized Russia over the attack, writing on Telegram: “Ordinary terrorists.”
Kharkiv region governor Oleh Synehubov wrote on Telegram that a 60-year-old woman was killed and other victims were being treated in hospital.
Prosecutors did not release details of the other victims, saying only that they were all women and one was 10 years old.
Citing a local official, Suspilne said at least three pavilions were destroyed in the attack and a shopping center was damaged, but Monday was not a market day.
