HONG KONG, Jan 12 (ANI): A Chinese national has been arrested in Tanzania for cyber fraud, the Hong Kong Post reported, raising concerns about the global threat posed by Chinese cybercriminals.
The Hong Kong-based publication said the Chinese suspect was one of 11 people arrested for cybercrime in December. According to reports, the Chinese national is alleged to have violated existing laws by the Tanzanian telecommunications authority by sending unofficial devices to connect people by phone to communicate abroad.

A large number of electronic items were seized from the suspects, including 23 mobile phones, 437 telephone lines of telecom service providers, six computers, five SIM card boxes, three routers and a power bank.
Eight other locals were also involved in the crime, including setting up social media accounts to spread false information about Tanzanian President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan and other senior government officials, the Hong Kong Post reported.

The report further stated that the suspects also allegedly posted false and misleading information on local online TV channels.
Tanzania released its report on cybercrime last December after a Chinese government-linked hacking group called APT41, based in Chengdu, misappropriated about $20 million from the U.S. Covid relief fund.
The Chinese government-linked hackers are from a Chengdu-based group called APT41. Other federal investigations into pandemic fraud also appear to point to hackers linked to foreign governments, according to a report released in December by the U.S. Secret Service, NBC News said.
“It’s crazy to think that this group isn’t targeting all 50 states,” Roy Dotson, the Secret Service’s national pandemic fraud recovery coordinator, told NBC.
The U.S. Secret Service declined to confirm the scope of the other investigations. NBC reports that they say APT41 is a notable player in the ongoing investigation of more than 1,000 schemes involving transnational and domestic criminals to defraud the public interest. (Arnie)
